A university with a proud tradition. On 19 September 1899 the Austrian Emperor and Hungarian King Franz Joseph 1 signed a decree bringing into existence a Czech technical university in Brno.This was the first Czech higher education institution in Moravia. It became an important centre of teaching and research, greatly enriching the life of Czech society, a role that it has continued to play down to the present. When it opened, the university had with four professors and forty-seven students. In the course of more than 110 years is has matured into an internationally recognized institution offering a cutting-edge education based on the latest scientific and professional knowledge delivered at eight faculties and Institute of Forensic Engineering covering a broad spectrum of fields ranging from technical and scientific disciplines through economics to the arts.

According to the newest edition of QS World University Rankings - published in June 2012 - Brno University of Technology reached position 151-200 in category Civil Engineering. University has been mentioned in this prestigious ranking since 2005 and this result is so far the best one in category rankings. Total results should be available in September 2012.

At the present time more than 24,000 students are enrolled at BUT at 8 faculties and 2 university institutes:

  • The faculty of Information Technology - FIT
  • The faculty of Business and Management - FBM
  • The faculty of Civil Engineering - FCE
  • The faculty of Mechanical Engineering- FME
  • The faculty of Fine Arts - FFA


  • Institute of Forensic Engineering (IFE) - The aim of the institute is teaching forensic experts in master's degree programs - Venture engineering and Forensic engineering (expert engineering in transportation and real estate). It is possible to study The Forensic engineering program as a doctoral study. In preparation is the transformation of the institute to the separate department faculty with the temporary name the Faculty of Forensic Engineering.
  • Centre of Sports Activities (CESA) - studying is not only about lectures and exams. While studying at the Brno University of Technology, you can do sports and have fun throughout the whole year! Would you like to do juggling, frisbee or diving? No problem, you can choose from almost 50 different sports, both traditional, such as basketball and swimming, as well as less traditional ones.
