The Silesian University in Opava, legitimate member of European University Association, belongs among the top five universities created after 1989. Immediately after its inception, the university provides students with compehensive education in the fields of humanities and economics areas. At the Silesian University Campus, future academic specialists are preparing for the professional or scientific life in the fields of history, physics, mathematics, literature, language, gastronomy, health care, multimedia and art areas.

In the academic year 2012/2013, number of students in all parts of the Silesian University in Opava, exceeded the number of eight thousand.

Faculties:

  • The Faculty of Philosophy and Science - started in 1990 as a Faculty of the Masaryk University in Brno and in 1991 it became part of the Silesian University in Opava. The Faculty teaches the subjects of arts (history, museology, archaeology, the Czech language, foreign languages, and library science), sciences (physics and computer science) and one art subject of creative photography. Today there are 14 study programmes for a bachelor's degree, 12 study programmes for a master's degree and 6 study programmes for a doctor's degree.
  • The Faculty of Public Policies - provides a wide range of courses which enable graduates to find employment in the public service and public policy sectors.
  • The School of Business Administration in Karvina - is one of the youngest universities in the Czech Republic. It was founded in 1991. It is a university with a wide range of study programmes and significant contacts with universities in Europe and overseas.

    • The Silesian University is divided into five educational units:

    • The School of Business Administration in Karvina
    • The Faculty of Philosophy and Science in Opava
    • The Faculty of Public Policy in Opava
    • The Mathematical Institute in Opava
    • The Educational Centre in Krnov

The faculties offer interested parties several dozen bachelor´s, master´s and doctoral degree programs
